TRADE UNIONS CAN BE TRANSFORMATION AGENTS - RICHARD RIOT

Richard Riot presenting his speech
KOTA KINABALU: Trade Union leaders can shoulder the responsibility vested by Trade Unions and the Government to be transformation agents for all its members.

This is where the tripartite concept involving the employee, the employer and the government becomes  central  in efforts to maintain harmonious relations  between employer and employee to establish healthy investment atmosphere.

In this regard, Human Resources Minister Dato’ Sri Richard Riot said  his  Ministry constantly  prepared transformation and development programmes in an effort to further enhance the harmonious and condusive industrial realtions to develop productive human resources.

Richard Riot was speaking during his opening speech of the Seminar on Trade Union Training on Leadership and Reconteur (TUTELAR) at Magellen Sutera Resort this afternoon.

The seminar is attended by 200 participants representing  40 Trade Unions all over Sabah.

The Minister said it is government’s wish to create human capital which is knowledgeable and able to think.

“ As such workers should sharpen their knowledge and skills through reskilling, multiskilling and upskilling. Many training opportunities have been designed to produce  workers who are self- confident and able to assist the employers to compete in local and international markets,” he said.

Richard said the role played by Trade Unionists today remains very big and challenging.

“ The often negative perception that Trade Unions are “forcing agents” should be discarted. Their  leadership today should be transformed to regard the present Trade Unions  as supporters, partners and suppliers. As a medium between the employer and the employee, the leaders should sharpen their communicative skills to channell the members immediately and effectively the decisions that are taken,” he added.

He also said the Minimum Retirement Age 2012  effective 1st July, 2013 introduced for the private sector,  had benefitted 7.8 million workers.

“ Extension of retirement age would benefit workers to generate more income and savings for the retirement age,”.

Richard said although the government decided to implement the Act on 1st July, 2013, it has been postponed to 31st December 2013 upon the request of the employers.-/PENERANGAN
