Sabah Govt Praised For Giving Expensive Land For People’s Housing Programme

KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri  Datuk Seri Hj Muhyiddin Hj. Mohd Yassin urged the State Governments to allocate sufficient land to build affordable homes.
This will help the government  to reach its objective to build 1 million homes for the low income group.
“I praise the Sabah State government for allocating a land costing millions of ringgit at a strategic place here,” he told before officiating  the ground breaking ceremony  of  People’s  Housing Programme at Kepayan Ridge this morning.
Muhyiddin said  Sabah was fortunate that with the help of the Chief Minister,  able to obtain a piece of land for the People’s Housing Project at Kepayan Ridge.
“ Without land the Federal Government can’t carry out the project. This is the second largest project in Malaysia after Wilayah Persekutuan,” he added.
The Deputy Prime Minister said five hundred houses would be built here and though  this is a small number, it means  big thing for him as the government was committed to build more affordable houses for the low income group in Malaysia.
The houses consisting five blocks will be built on 6.437 acres of land belonging to Sabah Housing and Town Development Board (LPPB).
Muhyiddin said the  RM80 million project  is aimed at   providing adequate housing for people with monthly income less than RM2500  and those living in squatter areas without proper housing.
“The houses would be sold at RM42,000 each and the people must understand those are highly subsidised by the government. A similar house will cost between RM130,000 to RM150,000 outside," he added.
Earlier, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said  this housing project was  a clear testimony .that the Federal Government is really committed in giving priority to the needs of people  basic facilities such as education and affordable housing.
“I believe the implementation of this housing project will not only benefit the people with low income, but will also see more comfortable and systematic homes,” he said.
Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Dato’ Abdul Rahman Dahlan, who has been entrusted with the task to complete such projects in Malaysia,  said the construction work at Kepayan Ridge  will begin soon and expected to be completed  in 2017.
“The houses with 700sq ft  floor space  will have 3 rooms, 2 baths, a hall, dining space, kitchen and place to dry clothes.
“The houses are priced at  RM42,000 each. But those who can’t afford to buy can opt to rent at  RM124 per month..
“Also 100 units of these houses will be allotted for  young married couples below 30 years of age as a ”transit house” to allow them to stay for two years before they can save enough money to buy  own houses, “ Rahman said.
The housing scheme will have various facilities such as kindergarten, surau, multipurpose hall, parking lots, administrative office, play ground and open space.
The Kepayan Ridge People Housing Project is one of the 13 projects which were approved under the budget for 2013.
It is located 5km away from the city.-PENERANGAN
